Last week, I was afforded the opportunity from Hampel Corporation to become one of the first people to acquire The Ultimate Chicken Coop to review and give feedback. Not only did they send the coop but the optional attached run as well. It showed up by a semi! Scott and Noah took the pickup up to the road and had it pushed onto the truck. According to the driver it weighed in at about 250lbs total.
Hampel Corp states that it should take about 30 mins to assemble. Not sure if that is just the coop or the coop and run combo. It took us about 40 mins to put together the base, mind you that we made a few mistakes and had to redo a few steps. Had we read the directions better it would have been quicker. We also started at dusk and lost daylight. So, we had to finish the next morning. We got up bright and shiny in the morning and began, about 15 minutes in, it began to rain. We grabbed and hauled all the pieces into the garage to finish. The actual coop part only took 15-20 mins to assemble.
The best features?
Well, I do not even know where to start there are so many! It is Made In The USA! It has built-in easily removable nesting boxes and feeder/drinker boxes. The amount of ventilation is out of this world including floor vents, side vents, and a ridge vent. The simple easy design allows you to remove the lid and pressure wash it out in two shakes of a rattlesnake. I also love the peek-a-boo roof doors! Being able to peek in and see the girls is always nice. There are easy open doors for both the nesting box area and the feeder area. It comes equipped with two roosting bars in the house and two in the run area. They even designed the door so you can easily purchase and install an automatic motor for the chicken door. The run is made of thick welded wire which will help keep predators away. Each door or opening has good quality safety latches, no cheap hardware for this coop. The manufacturer took their time designing this coop trying hard to think of everything. Not that it’s that important but it is so freaking cute!
What would I add or change?
An optional wheel kit would be nice to turn it into more of a chicken tractor style. Not that it is hard or heavy to move but it does take two people. The only other change I suggested is including a door on both the coop and the run. As it is set up now you either have the door on the coop or on the run. I would prefer a door to both. I like to not only be able to lock the chickens into the run but at night I want to be able to lock them into the coop as well. Maybe I am old fashion but I do not want my chickens being able to go outside after dark. You can never be to safe when it comes to chickens and predators in my opinion.
- I heard from one of the big guys today at Hampel Corp, not only are they working on a wheel kit, they hope to release it by the end of the year!
- They are working on a door modification so that a second door can be added along with the instructions to make said modification.
I could not be more thrilled on how they listen to their customers and make the adjustments to their coop with no hesitation. Their customer service is A+++++
How would I rate The Ultimate Chicken Coop by Hampel?
I would easily give it A, it is in my opinion the best manufactured coop I have ever seen. With a tweak for the door I would give them a A+ with no hesitation. They are running a great promotion right now if you are interested 10% off plus free shipping.
Exclaimer: I was not paid to review The Ultimate Coop. However, I received the coop for free, with the companies understanding that I would only write and/or blog on it if I loved the product. The Hampel Corporation was so confident in their product that they accepted my terms and conditions. I never promote a product I do not myself love and use.
