In between St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of spring, is a little-known holiday … National Poultry Day!
Not much is known about when or why this holiday came about, but we do know that for thousands of years chickens have been enjoyed for their eggs, meat and free live entertainment!
Here’s some suggestions on how to celebrate this holiday:
1. Try a new recipe with eggs and/or chicken as the main ingredient.
2. If you don’t have your own flock of backyard chickens, visit your local farmers market and purchase a dozen farm-fresh eggs or a free-range chicken. (You’ll never purchase store-bought again!)
3. Give your flock a handful of their favorite treats: mealworms, sunflower seeds, grapes …
4. Share your favorite photo of your flock on our Facebook page! Here’s the link: Community Chickens.
5. Head over to Storey Publishing’s Facebook page or their blog, Inside Storey, and enter for a chance to win a basketful of chicken-related items. All you have to do is leave a comment (the contest continues until Monday, March 26).
6. Watch this video of a chicken playing a piano … If this doesn’t get you into the spirit of National Poultry Day, I’m not sure what will!
