This month’s Cool Coop is for those of us out there that want an awesome chicken coop, but don’t have the time or skills to do a complete DIY project. The Green Chicken Coop is a great example of a ready to assemble coop that is a safe, solid housing structure for your flock. Once the coop is assembled, then you can add your own specifics to make your set-up unique for your needs and requirements in a “Cool Coop!”
Continue reading as one of our Community Chickens readers, Lisa King, shares her experience of ordering and constructing a mail order coop.
My coop was ordered from a company called Green Chicken Coop in Michigan (owner’s name is Dan). This is their Elizabeth model which is constructed with exterior grade 3/4″ plywood, functional predator proof windows, double front door, two 3′ nesting boxes, roosting bars, and linoleum flooring.
The coop/run was delivered on two skids and the assembly directions that Dan provided were exact and perfectly explained. It took us only a day to assemble and the garden around the coop/run took just another day to finish. The coop also has full electrical outlets both inside and out. The coop roof is done in cedar shakes and the outside color can be customized to your choice.
The coop sits above the ground on a skid and I put rocks under the coop to deter rodents. It is attached to a 9′ A-frame predator proof run that has 6′ of cedar so my brood can go outside in inclement weather and the run has a full sand base for easy clean up.
I also use automatic feeders and waterer so it is a breeze to maintain my hens.
Thanks Lisa for sharing your experience with our readers. I know there are a lot of us that have considered ordering a custom or pre-built coop, but wondered about the quality of the actual product and the ease of the construction process. – Looks like you chose wisely – your coop is great!
