Because I was down to three chickens, I decided to purchase a few additional chicks. The local all-purpose garden/farm store, Nixa Hardware and Seed, occasionally has what they refer to as “chick-days” (where a supplier comes with an assortment of breeds of chickens, ducks and turkeys). There isn’t a required quantity you have to buy, so I headed to the store and bought three new chicks. Even though I’m a big fan of my gentle, docile Buff Orpingtons, I’m tired of not being able to tell them apart and I wanted to add a little color to the coop. I still wanted an even-tempered, winter hardy breed and I eventually decided on a Gold Laced Wyandotte, a Barred Plymouth Rock and a Cinnamon Queen.
