Birds are often most vulnerable to disease and infection during their early days. When a combination of rapid growth and close confinement come together it creates the perfect conditions for harmful bacteria. Even a nonfatal level of virus can slow their development. No one likes to think of her or his birds suffering with illness. That is why it is so important to keep their drinking water as clean as possible.
Even if you clean your drinkers every few hours poultry have the irritating habit of messing up their water. That is why so many people have turned to nipple drinkers. Even when breeding birds on a small scale, it is always hard to manage the space where young birds are growing, making sure that it stays clean and dry. As each day passes and young birds get bigger, they need more and more space, and it is sometimes hard to gauge precisely when chicks become poults and poults become pullets.
During this potentially stressful time, poultry keepers need to be careful and attentive. Under a heat lamp droppings are a perfect breeding ground for disease, such as Coccidiosis and Hexamita. Both will quickly kill large numbers of birds. This is particularly a problem when droppings end up in their drinking water. Another lethal combination is wet bedding mixed with droppings.
Horizontal watering nipples, however are spring-loaded and seal with a rubber O-ring. This eliminates leaking and keeps excess water off the coop floor or at least to a minimum. A scientist would find it difficult to grow bacteria faster in a laboratory than it does in a drinker kept at body temperature by a heat lamp.
Horizontal nipples have a unique tapered thread design that offers many options. They will screw into a 1/8” pipe thread. They will push in 1/2” tubing. You can drill a 3/8” hole in PVC pipe or a pail and screw them in.
It is surprising how quickly the birds are able to figure out how the nipples work. The key being to remove all other sources of water. Most will be using them in a few hours. A lot of people become concerned that they are not getting enough water. They notice that the water level is not going down as fast as it was. But that is because there is so much less wasted water.
Horizontal nipples are spring loaded. They only release water when the bird pecks them. They have a positive seal as soon as they stop. Each nipple will service roughly 25 poults or 6 to 8 adult birds. Another great advantage if they are mounted in PVC they can be installed flush to a wall. That means the birds cannot perch on them and fowl the water.
You can also incorporate our high-pressure float valve to your gravity fed system. Making it an auto fill system. Just hookup your water to the float valve and will it automatically keeps the water level. Comes complete with hose adapter or remove the adapter and hard plumb it.
