We all like to spoil ourselves with undeniably tasty treats from time to time, so why would it be any different for our chicken & poultry flocks? Here on 25 Acres, we like products that can easily be stored in the coop year round.
While nutrition is key, treats can also be a great tool to train a free-ranging flock that some of the best grub can only be found at home. Here’s a list of our top 3 shelf-stable products that your birds will sure to be excited over!
These little, dried gems have always been numero uno on our list. Found in most pet and farm supply stores, these guys pack a protein punch. These worms are great for winter treats when bugs are not plentiful outside. Many times I will introduce mealworms into the brooder to teach young chicks to seek out other creepy crawly sources of food.
Dried Red Shrimp
If you are lucky enough to find the premixed Henny Penny dried shrimp and mealworm blend, then you’ve got it good – or rather your birds do. If not, never fear, you can purchase dried red shrimp and make your own mixture. My flock goes nuts when they realize shrimp are on the menu. These little pink guys are shelf stable and another great way to increase the protein.
Dehydrated or Freeze Dried Fruit & Veggies
The key to supplying your birds with this type of treat is making sure the product you choose has not been overly treated. By this I mean, no added sweeteners or preservatives – be sure to read the label. Mother Earth Products has a large variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from. From blueberries, strawberries, green beans and sweet corn, the list is long and certain to thrill your flock.
When it comes harvest time, I make sure to throw some homegrown produce into our Gardenmaster Dehydrator. Although the texture can be noticeably tougher than freeze-dried versions, the nutritious eats are a welcome addition to scratch grains during the winter.
