I am always looking for ways to help ensure the good health of the animals that live on our farm.I feel like doing so is part of my job as their keeper.I take this part of my animal keeping very seriously, whether it concerns the hens that live in our coop, the goats that reside in the old horse stall in our circa 1840 barn, our French Angora rabbit, or the pets that live in the farmhouse.
We don’t stop at the feed in the coop when trying to ensure that our heritage breed hens’ nutritional needs are met.I’ve made no secret of the fact that we feed our hens popsicles and frozen berries on hot summer days and warm bowls of oatmeal on the cold winter mornings that dominate our New England calendar.I feel that these measures go a long way toward helping our flock cope with the sometimes unpredictable and unrelenting weather that surrounds their coop.
The ingredients for Chickie Puffs are:Non-GMO corn, Non-GMO wheat, alfalfa, Musca domestica pupae (flies), flax, vegetable oil, kelp, spirulina, powdered egg, oyster shell. The guaranteed analysis promises a minimum of 18% protein and 9% fat.Chickie Puffs contain a maximum level of 6% fiber.
Then I noticed that one of the chicks was picking at the feeder in a different way.It was obvious what she was doing. She was picking through the contents of the feeder and eating the Chickie Puffs first. It was a lot like watching a child eating a bowl of cereal.A child will eat the marshmallows out of their cereal first.Apparently, at least one of our chicks wanted to enjoy her Chickie Puffsbefore moving on to her morning breakfast.
